Portrait of Peking
Poem: Sonya
English translation: Zhang, liguo
From the top of the old city wall
I saw the willows swaying in the wind
The high gate of the Forbidden City is in my field of vision
The towers spread the bloody sunset
In the distance are yellow, blue and green tiles and glazed roofs
Below a pond with swaying lotus flowers
The zigzagging winding corridors
The carved dragon with a ring in its mouth
Is the decoration for the gold gilded water tanks
Towering old trees shade the sky
The dragon's mouth spits pearls
White marble railings are surrounded
If you haven’t seen the red wall and blue glazed tiles yet
The alleys of old Beijing
Have not tasted the kidney bean roll or the pea cake
Never caught a glimpse of the waters of the North Sea
And the Jingshan Pavilion
How can you say you've been to the heart of Beijing?
After all the vicissitudes of life, the towers of old Beijing
Never pay attention to influential people
Come and go under his feet
They stand tall and firm
Amidst the hustle and bustle of the city
Let the time pass quietly
